History

The Glasgow Humane Society is a unique charitable Institution.
James Coulter, a wealthy Glasgow Merchant left a sum of £200 in his Will to help found a Humane Society within Glasgow. Similar Societies were being set up all over the world. In London, Paris, Venice Amsterdam, New York, Hamburg and many other mostly European Cities.

On August 16th 1790 the inaugural meeting was held in the Tontine Hotel.

Officer George Parsonage

George Parsonage was born in 1943 in the Glasgow Humane Society House on the banks of the River Clyde.
From the age of 14, George would help his father Benjamin with recoveries on the waterways in and around the City of Glasgow.

Officer Tony Coia


Tony Coia was born in 1980 in Glasgow. From the age of 17, Tony started his life-saving career, and continues in Lifeguarding and is a trainer assessor with Culture & Sport Glasgow.
